There are dozens of social networks and while some marketers believe that signing-up for each and everyone is well-worth the effort, others agree that following that practice is rather futile.
In the following article, I am going to talk about the two big social networks – Facebook and Twitter.
As you certainly know (unless you’ve been living under a rock), those three social mediums are currently the ones marketers pay most of their attention to.
And it’s no wonder – each works on a different principle but either way the potential is there and if you are serious, you can also get some serious traffic.
Leaving that aside, below I will share some of the common practices people seem to follow on this social media trio, which ones are worth and which are plain myths.
Facebook Dos and Don’ts
1. Do Share Your Own Content Every Day
That is the golden rule. There’s really nothing bad in self-promotion. But unless you’ve spent hundreds of dollars to advertise your fan page or to create sponsored stories, generating a buzz around your fan page and turning it into traffic is no easy task.
The Facebook page is yours, so there’s really nothing bad in sharing posts from your own blog. I’d say doing so is actually obligatory if you want to make Facebook a worthwhile time-investment.
Don’t expect that just the link in the fan page about field will get people clicking and reading your blog.
2. Be Careful not To Bore People
Yeah, your articles (or articles from other blogs for that matter) might all be interesting and they might all provide information, that’s worth the read.
However sometimes people just want to have fun.
And as serious as your niche might be, there should always be place for that.
Stories, comics, pictures – you need to mix things a little.
Those are the kinds of posts that get the bigger part of the likes, shares and comments.
3. Be a Real Person, Not a Just the Next “Brand”
A Facebook page can either be very impersonal OR it can be a place where all kinds of folks come to share their own points of view on different matters. What you make out of it is all up to you and I’d highly recommend you the second option.
The first step is to start writing descriptions to each and every story you make. It doesn’t matter if it is an image that you are sharing, your latest blog post or an infographic you just came across. Whatever it is, make sure to tell people why you are sharing that specific piece and tell them why they should take a minute to check it out.
Additionally you should also pose different questions, reply to those who comment on them and thus create a discussion. Whenever someone leaves a comment, be it a positive or a negative one, you should always have a standpoint.
In short, show people you are a living, breathing organism, just like them!
Here are 10 tips to creating engaging Page posts from Facebook for Business.
4. Don’t Irritate Your Fans
Especially with the notification system that Facebook made available for the fan pages, you should pay even more attention to what you share.
Since that feature allows your fans to subscribe for your updates i.e. to get notified via the notifications icon on the top bar, you must make sure not to irritate them.
Basically consider factors such as how much stories per day you post (I wouldn’t recommend more than 2-4), how much promotional content you share (for instance reviews of products with affiliate links in them) and also what the ratio between publications with links, text only and images is.
Also make sure not to post too many images and quotes – although they tend to get lots of attention – they shouldn’t be the focal point of your Facebook marketing strategy.
Twitter Dos and Don’ts
5. Don’t be Afraid to Use Automation
Over time I’ve seen lots of different opinions on the automation topic. It seems like lots of marketers don’t think of it is a genuine way to make progress in the social media realm.
But in the end, I can’t really see why so much criticism revolves around automation…
As bloggers our priority should come down to creating content. Looking from that perspective, every saved minute that goes towards writing, should be valued.
6. Use Twitter for More than Sharing
Blog post ideas, new connections and lots of interesting discoveries are some of the things you can achieve by paying attention to Twitter not only when you need traffic. One of the biggest issues with the microblogging platform is namely self-promotion – it seems like everyone’s there for that and nothing else.
The system can’t function that way. There’d really be no point if everyone would be to log-in, tweet their own post and log-out. You also have to see what others have in store!
As a matter of fact you might be surprised by how much new things you can get to discover thanks to Twitter.
Adding your favorite bloggers to lists and taking five minutes to check some of their shares every day might turn out a doorway to new discussions with new people, new content for your to-read list, new blog post ideas and more traffic.
That’s how Twitter marketing should be done!

7. Don’t Waste too Much Time on It
There’s no doubt – engaging with others is a crucial component to every successful social media campaign. However one counter-intuitive advice from me is don’t get carried away.
Discussions are a great thing, as they lead to new ideas. Saying thank you to those who’ve supported you is also important, since it helps you build trust. In the end of the day however, that is not the key to success.
Social media is just how you spread the word.
I would recommend you to set a schedule of some sort.
It’s simple the more time you spend on this, the less productive you actually are.
8. Care About Both Quality and Quantity
Quality over quantity – that seems to be a trend nowadays. Indeed one should focus on quality. Having inactive followers, who don’t even share your interests is worthless – there’s no denying.
But then again, why not keep the quality and ramp up the quantity factor simultaneously?
Namely because, as I mentioned above, people rarely take the time to check others’ work, tweets don’t get much exposure. It’s logical that the more followers you have, the more people will end up seeing your tweets and acting upon them.
So let me tell you one thing – start working on your following! As of now I have over 35,000 followers and Twitter traffic is going up with each and every new follower I get.
Final Words
That’s all, folks!

Thanks for the feedback, Kojo.
Erik, love the image of Twitter as cigerattes and spending too much time there – That’s me! LOL. Really good tips. I like the one of not to bore people. I’m always more leary of what I share on Facebook for that reason. I do keep groups there to avoid it but I still always don’t share enough there….
Google+, I haven’t really been on much there for the past several months. I just ran out of time for that one. I use Pinterest more and LinkedIn vs. Google+. I will have to try to revisit that one soon.
Thanks for these awesome tips Erik! Have a great rest of the week.
I love that image too, Lisa! 🙂
It really gives the idea.
I’m concentrating too more on Pinterest than on Google+, I must say.
I should write something about it!
Thanks for your comment, have a good rest of this week.

Hi Ann,
good to hear you learned something new from this post.
Thanks for the kind comment!
Erik,
It is always nice to get information from someone that has been deep into these platforms. As a business professional I do not have time to research what to do and what not to do on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, etc.
Thank you for the fantastic write up and keep up the amazing work.
-Alvin
Glad to read you liked this guide, Alvin.
Thanks for the kind words.
I agree with you Erik. Reading through this post, I really saw myself when I first started. It’s really nice to see people sharing their knowledge on how to do things online for business. Although, there are a lot of automation nowadays, it’s really important to have engagement. What you are doing right now, replying to comments, is a good sign and a show of passion to what you are doing. Kudos to you Erik!
Hi Marlon,
I think replying to comments show dedication and respect towards your readers.
Thanks for the kind words!
Erik:I focus on the DO stuff and forget about the don’ts… 😉
That’s a great tip, Martin! 😉
Hey Erik,
When I first started writing on the web about a year ago, I started to see people add me to their G+ Circles. I was baffled! I’d always thought of G+ as Google’s unsuccessful attempt at becoming Facebook. But the more I used it, the more I realized: The people who actually USE Google Plus are ACTIVE users, and ACTIVE readers of your content. If someone reaches out to me on Google Plus, I can be sure I reached them on a much deeper level than if they liked my tweet.
G+ users are normally bloggers or internet marketers. I guess that’s the reason they are active readers of your content.
Good observation, Matt. 🙂
Great tips there Erik,
I believe that being active in the social media helps one’s business to grow and also gain trust from people in the industry. I usually spend about an hour trying to connect with other people in the industry, following and commenting and since I did this, I have been getting some great insights.
Thanks for the great share.
Cindy
Hi Cindy,
good to hear you are investing part of your time to build connections.
That’s really important and social media is an effective way to achieve it.
Thanks for being here commenting my post,
have a good weekend! 🙂
Very helpful post Erik. I came across so many new points today here. I am able to share things with social media, but consistency is really a big deal for me.
I want to add one more point here. We need to share our post with relevant groups, we usually use the same heading with the same Hashtag, right? What happens here is, if you go through a Hashtag that you used in the title, you will see the same post multiple times there. Because you have posted the same heading in different groups.
So I am telling here is we should use the Hashtag only once, and the others will be without hashtag or with a different hashtag.
Did you get my point?
Thanks for sharing this awesome post with us. 🙂
Please allow us to follow the comments adding a check box in the comment section.
I see your point, Sameer.
If you are sharing the same article to different groups inside the same social network (e.g. Facebook), I’d go with a slight diverse title each time.
I use CommentLuv, you’ll get notified of new replies to your comments. 🙂
Great ideas and comments here. Until recently I used to write a fashion blog (I don’t have time for it nowadays unfortunately) but one of the lessons I learnt was to network with other bloggers, leave comments, ask questions and be helpful. Also doing a weekly roundup of useful blog posts within your niche is a good idea.
Love your blog. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the positive feedback, Elise.
In social media marketing you can hire someone that is an expert in the field of customer service. People who have spent time building skill sets in any one of these areas are going to have a desirable mix of experience and perspective in comparison. Don’t set up social channels with the intention of just sharing content that other people produce without adding anything original of your own,
Find your audience, provide good content. That’s the same rule, whether you are marketing your business on a website or via social media.
I highly appreciate your informative information Erik. Its important that your website is everyday has new and fresh contents to get more traffics in your fan page. Brilliant idea!
By the way thanks for sharing Erik!
Excuse me sir… how many new status update in twitter to engage targeted customer? I need your recommendation, especially when giving update in the morning. Thank you
I normally go with one tweet per hour, it works like charm for me, Tanah.
Thanks for sharing these potent tips. Technology changes quickly and the expectations of our users keep rising with about the same speed. So these dos and don’ts are really helpful.
Appreciate the kind feedback, Kara.
Hello Erik,
This was a great blog post with so many helpful points. I have been utilizing Twitter a lot more. You are right about being positive, persistent and patient. Those are definitely the key words when it comes to social media, blogging and internet marketing. I have been utilizing hashtags more often and I seem to get more retweets and followers when I use them. You are right that mixing it up on social media helps a lot too. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I’m adding just one hashtag per tweet, Maketta.
It works for me too.

Being persistent is important as well in online business.
It’s my #1 factor of success.
Spectacular, dos and donts in social media marketing and it another educating word for having a business online, Thank you, Erik. A patient is the most important to build in yourself because having social media is difficult.
Thanks for the positive comment, Erwin.
Hey, Great share.
I really appreciate your article…
I believe social media marketing is generally fun and enjoyable approach to implement. You got able to attach with other people who you may not have been able to reach without social media.
You got to understand these people and eventually create a relationship that goes beyond the business but involves familiarity and compatibility.
Keep posting. 🙂
These are all great tips, but they also all remind me of how hard you must work to make these things happen. Thanks for sharing Erik, another great post!
Hi Eric… your explanation really help me to know more about social media improvemnet. Thank you
One should find new ideas that touch the interests of people to go viral.
very helpful tips, you have explained each and every point very well. I just wanted to add one thing that images also play an important role in social media to grab more attention from the audience.
Thank you Erik for sharing such great tips.
Nice Post
Thanks for sharing this great tips for social media marketing
I really liked the don’t for Twitter part.
Thanks for sharing this information.
Hey Erik,
Thanks for explaining the Facebook marketing strategy. Entrepreneurs would find your content really useful. I agree with you that our content should be interesting enough and we shall use comics or interesting graphics but be aware not to irritate them. Based on my personal experience, I would like to add that we should think ourselves as the audiences. We get irritated when a marketing website posts too often a day doesn’t matter how good the content is. Imagining ourselves as the audiences will help us launch a better content with good efficiency. Keep up with the good work.
Nice post, I must say I am more active in Instagram & Pinterest then Twitter, I should start focusing in it too. Thanks again for the amazing post.
I agree with you Erik. Perusing this post, I truly saw myself when I originally began. It’s truly ideal to see individuals sharing their insight on the best way to do things online for business. In spite of the fact that, there are a ton of mechanization these days, it’s truly essential to have commitment. What you are doing well currently, answering to remarks, is a decent sign and a demonstration of enthusiasm to what you are doing.
